Nowhere People is a series of photographic works exploring the haunting lives of the stateless and bares their invisible voices for the world to witness. Amongst the stateless are the Nubians in Kenya, the Dalits in Nepal and the Rohingya in Burma.

Nowhere People hauntingly captures the plight of millions of people who have no recognised nationality and are stateless. To be stateless means having no country and being refused the basic social, civil and economic rights to lead a functional life. Nowhere People is a series of photographic works exploring the haunting lives of the stateless and bares their invisible voices for the world to witness. Amongst the stateless are the Nubians in Kenya, the Dalits in Nepal and the Rohingya in Burma. The second book in Nowhere People, Exiled to Nowhere: Burma’s Rohingya will be published in May 2012 but for a photographic introduction to the human toll of being stateless can be found here.

The Rohingya community is amongst the fifteen million invisible voices and have been suffering persecution in since the military junta took over in Burma. The Rohingya are a Muslim minority from western Burma and are denied basic rights such as the freedom to travel freely, own property and are subject to extortion, forced labour and religious persecution. Over a quarter of a million Rohingya have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh seeking refuge yet were welcomed with hostile arms and makeshift refugee camps.

The Rohingya are neither citizens of Burma nor Bangladesh and remain paralyzed as stateless beings.
